Waste Auditing in Four Easy Steps

1. PLAN the audit carefully and define the study area. Good planning is essential to ensuring that the audit goes smoothly.

2. COLLECT the waste from the study area. Determine who is to collect waste,. The cleaners or waste contractors may be able to collect the waste for you. A trial run before the collection period is very helpful.

3. SORT the waste into different pre-determined categories and record the data. All locations should be recorded, the bags weighed and emptied onto the tables and sorted into categories. Each category should be individually weighed and recorded. The table should then be cleaned, the sorted waste disposed of and the process repeated for the next bag/ location.

4. ANALYSE the data and record results. Data should be entered into a database and analysed. Results should be written up and recommendations made. The information should be shared where possible.
