How to Avoid Injury and Illness
If you have to use hazardous substances there are a number of precautions you can take to reduce risks to your person:
- Choose the least toxic product available
- Follow directions given and use only the amounts indicated
- Wear protective clothing, including gloves, goggles and long sleeved shirts
- Do not wear soft contact lenses when working around solvents as they can absorb chemicals
- Use products in well-ventilated areas and keep containers tightly closed to prevent evaporation
- Use products outdoors when possible
- Avoid using aerosol spray products as particles are easily spread and can be easily absorbed into the blood stream. Aerosol cans are also highly explosive when exposed to heat or pressure.
- Never mix chemicals unless specifically instructed to do so on the product label
- Do not assume that all products without warning labels are non-toxic
- Pregnant women should avoid toxic chemical exposure as much as possible
- Do not throw hazardous substances into the trash as they could cause injuries to workers
- Do not bury hazardous products in the ground as they could contaminate soils and groundwater
- Do not pour hazardous substances down the drain as they could damage beneficial bacteria in sewage systems, septic tanks or suck wells
- Do not pour hazardous substances into gutters or ditches as pets and wildlife are exposed to chemicals disposed of in this way
- Store and dispose of hazardous substances only in the approved manner
- Store products in appropriate and labeled containers
- Keep hazardous substances out of the reach of children, pets and wild animals
- When in doubt contact the appropriate authorities for direction and assistance
- For information on, and assistance with, the treatment and disposal of solid waste contact the Environmental Engineering Division (EED) at (246) 436-4820.
