Reducing Pest Damage Using the Barrier Method
- Cover vegetables with a fine mesh – works well against rootfly, caterpillars, leaf weevils, white fly and birds;
- Remove cover and base from (2) litre PET bottle and place bottle over newly planted vegetables;
- Small gauge chicken wire is more effective against damage from mice and rabbits;
Garden Insects (1)
- Mix (1) tablespoon dishwashing detergent and (1) cup vegetable oil. Add (1) to (2) teaspoons of this mixture to (1) cup of water and spray it on the plants;
- Mix (4) chopped hot peppers, (2) cloves of garlic, (1 1 / 2 ) quarts of water and (2) of beer. Boil for (5) minutes. Let mixture steep for 24 hours. Add (1 1 / 2 ) cup vinegar, strain and pour into a spray bottle. Spray leaves (but not blossoms) – specially for fruit trees
Garden Insects (2 )
- Slice (1) banana peel into strips and insert them into a (2) litre PET bottle. In a separate container combine (1) cup sugar and (1) cup strong vinegar. Pour mixture over banana peel in bottle. Add water until mixture is about (3) inches from top of bottle. Hang from lower branches of a tree;
- Insects are attracted to the mixture. Once they fly in they get caught in the mixture and drown.
Do not just reduce your waste volume. Reducing the toxicity of the substances you use and therefore the wastes you produce is good for human health and for the environment.
