The Solid Waste Project at Agrofest
ISWMP
Project Manager – Solid Waste Ricardo Marshall showing participants in the compost workshop the finished product - compost.
Composting and its Applicability to Solid Waste Management in Barbados was the theme of the Solid Waste Project Unit’s participation at this year’s Agrofest.
In his presentation at a composting workshop put on by the unit, Ricardo Marshall, Project Manager Solid Waste, noted that compost was one of the best sources of organic fertilizer and significantly reduces waste going to landfill.
He added: “Results from recent waste characterization studies have indicated that approximately 50% of Municipal Solid Waste in Barbados is organic in nature.
He further noted that in Small Island Developing States where land is vital, landfilling as the only solid waste management option is unsustainable, thus organic waste needs to be diverted from landfills to prolong their use and to encourage the development of recyclable markets both locally and regionally.”
He highlighted what should and should not be composted and showed some examples of several types of compost bins. Further information on home composting can be found in our online brochure #4 on the website’s homepage.
